How Restorative Justice Can Ease Anxiety and Depression for Victims

Over the last few years Restorative Solutions have developed and delivered Restorative Awareness Courses for offenders. These cover a variety of offence areas and are usually issued as a condition of an out of court disposal by the police, either a community resolution or conditional caution, although they can be used as stand-alone interventions.
The Hate Crime Awareness Course (HCAC) is a single condition that can be added to a Community Resolution or Conditional Caution. It is a two-hour course run by Restorative Solutions, who deliver adult Restorative Justice (RJ) Services.
The course is based on restorative principles and seeks to get the offender to think about their actions and how they might impact on others, with a view to reducing further offending. Unlike standard Restorative Justice, the HCAC can be delivered either with or without the victim being involved. The victim is contacted and the impact of the behaviour explored, this is then used during the intervention by the facilitator to challenge the offender’s thinking and inform their understanding of the consequences of their behaviour.
Unlike most intervention courses, the HCAC is a one-to-one intervention designed to address the specific circumstances of each case. There must therefore be some clear specific hate language/behaviour that the offender has used, which the course provider can focus on and encourage reflection.
Restorative Solutions have additionally developed this approach into a group workshop for offenders where there is not an identified victim to the behaviour. These group sessions have also been successful in challenging and changing behaviour.
Using this model Restorative Solutions have developed and introduced similar awareness courses covering:
Anti-social Behaviour
Violent Crime
Assaults on Emergency Workers
Retail Crime
Feedback from offenders following completion of the courses:
I understand more now how the other person must have felt
I am now more aware about how my behaviour can affect others
I am now attending mental health support
We’d love to talk to you about how we can find a solution for you.
I'm so glad I am working with Restorative Justice. I don't know who would listen to me if it wasn’t for you.
Restorative Justice is very underrated and I certainly think we should be using it more.
Very satisfied – it’s been a great service. A worthwhile process for me and I hope for the offenders. Staff have been great and I would like to thank them.
It was the right thing to do. Both victims told me to let go of what happened. I didn't want to hear it but they both forgave me and said I should move on. I have taken that on and thought about it and I have come to terms with what happened. You've helped me significantly. It's as though my head has been lifted of a gigantic weight.
Thanks for your time today. I feel like you understand R so well, I really hope you can help him to learn how to be happy.
Restorative Justice offers a unique opportunity for victims and survivors to move on from and overcome the trauma that can be left with them after experiencing crime. I am exceedingly proud of the work that the team at Restorative Solutions do in supporting our community. We should always consider the needs of victims of crime and this service exemplifies that sentiment and allows so many to put behind them what can be the worst experience of their lives.
